Red Game Changers — All 3 on the MTG List (September 2026)
Red has three Game Changers — the smallest group of any colour, and 3 of 53 cards on the list. That is 3 of 53 cards for a colour that owns the format's rituals and its most-played wheel effect. It also means red is the only colour where the number of Game Changers available exactly equals the Bracket 3 cap.

| Card | Mana cost | Type | Role | USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gamble | R | Sorcery | Tutor | $18.00 |
| Jeska's Will | 2R | Sorcery | Fast mana, Card advantage | $38.62 |
| Underworld Breach | 1R | Enchantment | Combo piece, Engine | $10.64 |
A deck with even one of these cards is Bracket 3 at minimum. Brackets 1 and 2 allow zero Game Changers, Bracket 3 allows up to three, and Brackets 4 and 5 have no cap.
What each one actually does
- Gamble — One-mana tutor for any card — the random discard is a real cost but acceptable when retrieving from the graveyard is part of the plan or when finding a combo finisher.
- Jeska's Will — Both modes with a commander out: ritual a hand's worth of red mana and play three exiled cards. A single cast frequently produces 6-10 mana and three free spells.
- Underworld Breach — Gives every nonland card in the graveyard escape — turns Brain Freeze, Lion's Eye Diamond, and instants into a deterministic loop that wins through self-mill.
Which red Game Changers to keep at Bracket 3
Red has exactly three Game Changers and Bracket 3 allows exactly three, so running all of them is legal. It is still usually wrong, for a reason that has nothing to do with the cards.
- Jeska's Will. The strongest of the three and the one to keep if you keep only one. With a commander on the battlefield it does both things: a ritual for a hand's worth of red mana, and three free cards off the top. A single cast frequently produces six to ten mana and three spells.
- Underworld Breach. Keep it only if the deck already fills its own graveyard. It is not a value card — it is a combo engine, and in a deck without the pieces it is a two-mana enchantment that does nothing.
- Gamble. The weakest of the three, because the random discard is a real cost and not a small one. It earns its slot in decks that can retrieve from the graveyard, where the discard is upside, and in decks hunting a single specific finisher.
Your three Bracket 3 slots are a budget for the whole deck, not a per-colour allowance.
- Running all three. A Gruul deck that spends every slot on red has nothing left for Gaea's Cradle, Survival of the Fittest, or Seedborn Muse. A Rakdos deck that does it has nothing left for Necropotence or Demonic Tutor. Red's three are individually good and collectively a poor use of the cap, because none of them is the best Game Changer available to a two-colour deck that includes red.
- Gamble in a deck with no recursion. Discarding the card you just tutored for, at random, one time in however many cards are in your hand, is a real failure rate. Without a way to get it back you are paying one mana for a coin flip on a four-mana tutor.
Red lost Deflecting Swat in October 2025
Red had four Game Changers until the October 21, 2025 update, which removed Deflecting Swat (2R). We confirmed the colour identity in Scryfall's bulk oracle data: red, and the only red card among the ten cut that day.
Deflecting Swat was one of the free-spell cycle — cast it for nothing while you control your commander, and redirect a spell or ability. The removal leaves the cycle represented on the list by exactly one card, blue's Fierce Guardianship. Wizards' judgement was that redirecting one spell, once, is not the kind of effect the bracket system needs to restrict; a free hard counter still is.
Red is now the smallest colour on the list at 3 of 53 — under six percent — against colourless at twelve and blue and black at ten each. If you are building a red deck and worrying about the Game Changer cap, the arithmetic is on your side: red simply has very little on the list to trip over. Wheel of Fortune, the whole ritual suite, Past in Flames, and every red board wipe are legal in every bracket.
Budget alternatives in red
Red's substitutes are the easiest to find of any colour, because red's Game Changers are efficiency upgrades on effects red prints constantly.
| Game Changer | Budget substitute | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Jeska's Will | Mana Geyser | Five mana for a large one-shot burst that scales with how many lands your opponents control. No card advantage attached. |
| Jeska's Will | Pyretic Ritual | Two mana for three. The plain version of half of what Jeska's Will does. |
| Jeska's Will | Seething Song | Three mana for five. The other plain ritual, and a storm staple that is not on the list. |
| Jeska's Will | Neheb, the Eternal | Turns combat damage into red mana in the second main phase. A repeatable engine rather than a one-shot, on a body that can be removed. |
| Underworld Breach | Past in Flames | Gives your graveyard instants and sorceries flashback for one turn instead of giving everything escape forever. The same idea with a hard stop. |
| Gamble | Goblin Engineer | Finds an artifact rather than any card, and puts it in the graveyard rather than your hand — which suits a deck that wanted the graveyard anyway. |
Red has no clean substitute for Gamble as an unconditional tutor, because red does not get unconditional tutoring. If the deck needs to find a specific nonartifact card and cannot spend the Game Changer slot, the honest answer is to add redundancy instead of a tutor: run two copies of the effect rather than one copy and a way to find it.
Every card in the middle column was checked against Scryfall's bulk oracle data and none of them carries the Game Changer flag, so all of them are legal in Bracket 2.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many red Game Changers are there?
Three: Gamble, Jeska's Will, and Underworld Breach. Red is the smallest colour group on the 53-card list.
Can I run all three red Game Changers in a Bracket 3 deck?
Yes, the cap is three and red has exactly three. But the cap covers the whole deck, so spending all three slots in red leaves nothing for the other colours in a two-colour or three-colour build.
Why was Deflecting Swat removed?
It was cut on October 21, 2025, one of ten removals. Wizards judged that redirecting a single spell for free was not warping games at the level the list is designed to address. Blue's Fierce Guardianship, a free hard counter, stayed.
Is Wheel of Fortune a Game Changer?
No. Wheel of Fortune is not on the list and is legal in every bracket, despite being one of the most powerful red cards in the format.
