Battle lands enter untapped if you control two or more basic lands, and they have basic land types (making them fetchable). This combination makes them strong in decks that run a healthy basic land count, particularly in Commander where basic-heavy mana bases are common. Battle for Zendikar (2015) printed the five allied pairs; the five enemy pairs first appeared in Commander decks: Edge of Eternities Commander (2025; Radiant Summit, Vernal Fen), Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander (2026; Sodden Verdure) and Secrets of Strixhaven Commander (2026; Eclipsed Steppe, Scorched Geyser).

Strategy

Battle lands reward running basics. In Commander decks with 10+ basics, they usually enter untapped once two basics are out. Fetch lands can find them thanks to their basic land types. Their basic land types also turn on check lands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are battle lands fetchable?

Yes. Battle lands have basic land types. Prairie Stream is a Plains Island, so Flooded Strand or any fetch that searches for Plains or Islands can find it.
